Laurie Oxenford 'Implied'

On February 7th, 2020 at The Third Quarter Gallery on Petrie Terrace in Brisbane Laurie Oxenford (one of our faves), an emerging Australian sculptor, curator and artist, as well as one of our AW team, indulged us with her new creative perspective – IMPLIED.

Laurie’s installation and sculptural exhibition explored the presence of found functional objects existing in spaces, removed from the context that defines their purpose. Here they become functional only as aesthetic vessels for new meanings. Broken, expired and discarded objects, such as road signs or plastic sheeting, tools or containers, that are in a current existential purgatory were documented and transferred into a context where their value is to be reimagined by the artist and decided upon by the viewer.

The evening at Third Quarter was a great success for an artist with amazing potential. It was exciting for Laurie to see her work resolved outside her studio space and to share her works and vision with family, friends and the public – “it is also emotionally exhausting, but immensely rewarding”.

Laurie’s journey will continue to evolve with one year in France from 2020–2021 to expand her professional growth after winning the USQ Bellmaine French Appreciation Scholarship in 2019 to participate in curatorial placements and creative residencies abroad.

It is through opportunities like Third Quarter Gallery to support our local talent to have these experiences to shine and we are grateful.

Au revoir Laurie et bonne chance!
