March 2021: Five things to immerse yourself in this month

March: breezy, rainy and soft.

The first month of Autumn has seen some lovely rainy days, crispy mornings, and those stunning sunsets.

We love keeping up with our clients and our creative community – it’s a big passion of ours to share creative, and thoughtful projects run by talented people.

Here are five things to see this month.

Nine Lives Bazaar

Discover the extravagant world of Nine Lives Bazaar. The lovechild of Rose Madden and Vanessa Cave, work wives by trade and soul sisters by heart, Nine Lives Bazaar is for the lovers of locomotion, life and a lot of 70s spunk.

Self-confessed fossickers and forever inspired by golden eras, Rose and Ness revel in the eclectic unknown and glorious gamut of unearthed treasures. Beguiled by pre-worn troves of frocks and ephemera, they pondered the wild lives these garments had already lived before.

Dipping with bold colours, fierce freedom and unapologetic expression, Nine Lives Bazaar (NLB) is reminiscent of old-school ensembles with a new-age style. This time around, they fit a little better, feel a little softer and make your heart sing a little brighter.

NLB is a celebration of freedom, expression, good times and truly is an extension of Ness and Rose’s intrinsic style, just like it exists to be an extension of yours. It’s style for the sake of serendipity and soul, designed for the statement-makers. Because life’s too short for anything but.

This Is Art

Featuring names such as ShmickOwlet and Natpop, all artists will draw from the Arcana Major tarot card deck and then paint a live piece of their interpretation of the card, which will be hung for exhibit as the evening progresses.

So, what can you expect at a This Is Art event? Put simply: the unexpected. "We work hard to curate each event differently. The venue, music, and everything in between is all tailored to suit the aesthetic of the artists"

With Mint Art House taking care of the art, and Gold Coasts most in demand DJ's taking care of the music, including the likes of Latour and Shimmy Disco, the evening has all the makings for a gloriously good time.

This Is Art invites you to join their next immersive experience on Saturday, 10th April from 4 PM at 55 West Burleigh Road, Burleigh Heads.

Purchase tickets on Eventbrite or follow This Is Art on Instagram @thisisart_____

Platypus Publication

Issue 02, SALTY is out now. This issue is about exploring the sticky nuances of the mangroves and mudflats and to celebrate the most beautiful and mundane cultural icons of life. It will share through poetry, art works and anecdotes stories of climate change and rituals/relationships around salt-water and food and navigating queerness in a quintessential Australian/Italian nuclear family PLUS an Italian secret recipe book. The stories, poetry and imagery are honest and a little salty but made with an enormous amount of love and appreciation for the writer’s parents and the beautiful big tides they grew up on.

PLATYPUS is founded on the reality that all that is true, is rare and difficult. Choosing to be perceptive can be painful, but at least every wave that washes over your life can be as refreshing and as intense as the first. When it comes to family, there is no guarantee of mutual satisfaction, nor mutual feelings, just an enormous amount of misunderstanding and, more importantly, an unwavering amount of love.

Overheard Illustrated

Over on Instagram, we’ve been having a laugh as we read through overheard conversations.

Some of our favourites include:

“I just sold my beard for 24 cans of beer.” - Overheard: Beer InCider Festival, Brisbane

“I could drink you like a soup.” - Overheard: Bondi Junction, Australia.

Have a read for yourself, or send in a conversation you’ve overheard for the chance to have it illustrated.

Put the HOTA Gallery opening in your calendar

It all started with a painting…

William Robinson’s stunning painting The Rainforest (a key work in the City Collection) has been the inspiration for both the architectural design and future gallery programming: a trail-blazer full of wonder, discovery, creation, beauty, spectacle and scale. It will be filled with multiple ideas, an unfolding experience of viewpoints and trails that challenge us to dig deeper and get lost in creative ideas. It will have aspects of light and dark; points of discovery – both internally and externally.

HOTA Gallery will be the largest public gallery outside a capital city in Australia with the ability and ambition to present exhibitions and projects of national and international scale.

The gallery will officially be opening on the 8th of May, 2021.
