Becoming your best advocate

Fear can be the greatest inhibitor, preventing us from reaching full potential.

The key to being a successful creative is staying brave. Our ‘forever goal’ is to push ourselves, offer kindness and support, create new things, be open to learning and above all – have a fabulous time. Doing this takes courage and determination, which can be a hard thing to sustain every single day.

We’re proud to be 11 years old in 2021. After operating full time for this long, we’ve noted some of the things that helped us break free of the comfort zone to do things we didn’t know we could.

  • Understand the value of your work and ask for what you deserve when quoting to clients, as well as family and friends. Stand up for the integrity of what you create and realise that your time is valuable!

  • It's good to throw yourself into the deep end sometimes – say yes! If you never do anything wild and new, you’ll get stuck in a rut. We’ve experienced failure and made mistakes, but this is where the learning happens so don’t give up. Just remember you can always ask for help – we highly recommend seeking mentorship opportunities if you can! A straightforward way to do this is to email or message a person you admire professionally and propose a mentorship arrangement. Be confident and specific about what you need to learn!

  • Allow yourself to explore the “silly questions”, crazy ideas and strange curiosities of your curious mind, these things, after all, are the things that help you become better at your practice and your job!

  • Respect the integrity of your work and others will respect it too.

  • Don't compare yourself to others.

  • Be open to new ideas, change and learning!

  • Invest your time into building strong relationships. Knowing your team and others working in the same space as you have your back is important. Build a support network and don’t be afraid to reach out when you need help!

  • Face your fears. Understand the parts of the creative process you're particularly scared of and work towards destroying that fear through routine practice and process development.

  • Don't be put off if things don't necessarily seem to run smoothly. No-one gets it right 100% of the time, mistakes are normal. Reflect on what went wrong and learn for next time.
